Yes, I do. I actually used to laugh at race-based jokes when I was very young and remember feeling uncomfortable around some types of those jokes, but not all. But today, I’m genuinely uncomfortable around more and would be extremely uncomfortable with jokes about cooking, cleaning, and being a sex goddess — it seems both very sexist and very racist to me. Do you think that only Puerto Ricans can make that joke? I see that as being where culture is ending up — it’s okay to make jokes about your own culture, but not others.

I don’t know where the right line is, but I do think we should be careful about harmful stereotypes and jokes that can hurt…without taking away humor as a way to uplift communities.
