Well written as always, Shannon. Here's my genuine question: What would not be performative? I've seen so many celebrities cancelled lately and even apologies I think have been good (NOT this one) have been criticized for being performative. How do we know when it's genuine and when it's just better PR?

And then there's the question of if we should punish someone 10 years on, when they might genuinely be a completely different person now. I ask this question because I hear it asked often, but to be honest, I'm unsure if anyone this awful ten years ago can truly have changed by now without an awful amount of self-reflection and demonstrated improvement that I don't think we've seen with Chrissy. (That being said, I have friends who were like her as teens--terrible bullies--and ARE better now.)

Sigh. I mostly agree we put celebrities on far too high a pedestal. I kept hearing how many kids/teens looked up to her. I hope that stops.
