Last year, my New Year’s resolution was to exercise every day. I’d heard it from my friends, online media, and even doctors, who all said “exercise good, potato bad.” My resolution was in all honesty their resolution for me. I didn’t want to exercise more. I was perfectly happy with my walks a few times per week, my body image, and my weight. But the world kept judging.
So I gave into the usual pressure we feel around New Years to listen to everyone and I ended up with the worst New Year’s resolution ever. Why? Well, I didn’t care about exercising more which spelled disaster right from the start. If I didn’t care about my resolution, then why on earth would I actually follow through on it?
But then there’s the other parts. My resolution didn’t account for anything about my actual life, like my crazy work schedule that didn’t leave me time to exercise every day. In fact, if I had exercised daily, I’d have probably fallen behind on sleep which is worse for my health in the long-term. And, my resolution also sucked big time because it stemmed from social pressure.
The problem with all New Year’s Resolutions is that others write them for you.
