Great essay. I've learned this the hard way too. (And I also overshare online.) My new rule is basically the one we used when I was a government attorney: "Don't say anything you don't want appearing as a headline on the New York Times."

Luckily, I'm pretty open and I wouldn't mind most things on the headline of the NYT. But I also had to learn not to share tons of things I do want private.
